Maine Wind-Power Test Sites Chosen...

WLBZ2-NBC posted an article online that Maine will soon have test sites for wind turbine generators. If successful, it has the potential to power not only Maine, but much of New England, as well. It is going to be interesting to see where this ends up.

Maine - at least here in Eastern Maine - is already powered by hydroelectricity, but offering alternatives would be a great idea. I just hope that it isn't the government doing the offering. Private enterprises should be allowed to buy rights to start the wind turbines ane compete with Bangor Hydro and other energy companies in Maine and New England. Here is the article:

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Maine officials have identified locations of three offshore wind-power test sites that would be the first of their kind in the nation and could unlock the door to huge reserves of energy.
The administration of Gov. John Baldacci announced Tuesday that the sites will be near Boon Island off York in southern Maine, near Damariscove Island south of Boothbay Harbor, and south of Monhegan Island off Port Clyde.

UMaine Professor Habib Dagher says the test windmills will appear in 2011.

Dagher said winds off Maine's shores have a potential to produce the equivalent of 149 nuclear plants.

Gov. John Baldacci called the offshore test the first of its kind in the country and said, "This is where the future lies."

Kings Paying Way Home for Maine Troops...

Read this news article in the Bangor Daily News the other day. It's about how author Stephen King and his wife - Tabitha, who I believe is also an author - are paying for a group of Maine troops to come home for Christmas. Here is the article:

Brewer-based unit mustered for service in Afghanistan

BANGOR, Maine — Stephen and Tabitha King had no problem donating money to ensure that the 150 members of Bravo Company of the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Unit could come home for the holidays.
They did have a slight problem with the requested amount, though.
“Steve is such a numbers person,” said Julie Eugley, one of the author’s personal assistants. “When we were approached for $13,000, he thought that number was a little unlucky. He didn’t want any bad whammies associated with these troops.”
So instead the Kings donated $12,999 and Eugley chipped in the $1 to complete the request. That money will help pay for two bus trips — one from Camp Atterbury, Ind., to Portland, one from Camp Atterbury, Ind., to Bangor — for the soldiers of the Brewer-based 172nd, a division of the Maine Army National Guard.
Earlier this week, the unit departed from Maine for training at Camp Atterbury, Ind. They were scheduled to remain there until their January 2010 departure to Afghanistan, and even though they had a few days off for the holidays, they didn’t have the means to return home.
Thomas “Skip” Chappelle, who runs Operation Community Support — a Bangor-based military assistance nonprofit agency — thought something needed to be done. So he solicited the Kings for money.
Eugley stressed that the donation came from the Kings’ personal accounts and not through the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, which does not donate for travel purposes.
“It was a pretty easy sell. I asked. Steve said yes,” Eugley said.
Operation Community Support, which Chappelle and other volunteers founded in 2003, incorporated as a nonprofit in 2007. The group seeks to ease the burden on deployed service members and their families statewide by coordinating sendoff ceremonies, buying Christmas gifts for military families and other efforts. The Kings’ $12,999 donation is the largest ever given to Operation Community Support.
“This is the best opportunity we’ve had to get the word out about what we do,” Chappelle said Friday. The buses will be operated by Notch Above Tours of Colchester, Vt. The round-trip cost for each bus is $8,350. In addition to the donation from the Kings, Chappelle said the Family Assistance Center of the Maine Army National Guard would provide the remainder.
Maj. Gen. John W. Libby, adjutant general of the Maine Army National Guard, said the guard always tries to ensure that soldiers come home for the holidays as time permits. The donation from the Kings certainly made that much more feasible this time.
The bus ride from Indiana to Maine is more than 15 hours one way, but for soldiers heading home to see families before spending a year in Afghanistan, the long trip is worth it. They’re expected in Bangor around Dec. 23 and will leave shortly after Christmas. “We all know what that does for soldiers and their families,” Chappelle said.
Members of the 172nd took part in an emotional sendoff ceremony on Monday at the University of Maine’s Collins Center for the Arts. The 172nd Infantry, which includes other companies from New England, will head overseas sometime after the first of the year as part of an Army brigade.
By early 2010, the Maine Army National Guard will have deployed about 50 percent of its force overseas to Iraq or Afghanistan. The 133rd Engineer Combat Battalion, with 540 soldiers, returned from Iraq in 2005 and tentatively is scheduled to re-deploy to Iraq in early March.
Since 2001, the Maine Army National Guard has sent more than 2,300 men and women to Iraq and Afghanistan. Nine have died.

It's a good thing the Kings are doing. I salute you, and our troops.

Nelson & Cook's Logs Yield Climate Clues

Was combing through an e-mail conference I frequent and found something interesting. In one of the e-mails an article was posted from the Times Online - a paper from the United Kingdom.

In that article is stated that scientists in Great Britain were reading through logs of ship Captain's from the 1600's to about the 1750's. In it, it states as a reminder that a small ice-age - also known as The Little Ice-Age - occured between about 1600 to about 1850. Among the logs reviewed were those of Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson - which is to your left - and Captain James Cook, one of the most famous explorers of that age - I will post a pic of his portrait below. Records kept by Nelson and Cook are shedding light on climate change by Jonathan Leake
Britain's great seafaring tradition is to provide a unique insight into modern climate change, thanks to thousands of Royal Navy logbooks that have survived from the 17th century onwards.

The logbooks kept by every naval ship, ranging from Nelson’s Victory and Cook’s Endeavour down to the humblest frigate, are emerging as one of the world’s best sources for long-term weather data. The discovery has been made by a group of British academics and Met Office scientists who are seeking new ways to plot historic changes in climate.
“This is a treasure trove,” said Dr Sam Willis, a maritime historian and author who is affiliated with Exeter University’s Centre for Maritime Historical Studies.
“Ships’ officers recorded air pressure, wind strength, air and sea temperature and other weather conditions. From those records scientists can build a detailed picture of past weather and climate.”
A preliminary study of 6,000 logbooks has produced results that raise questions about climate change theories. One paper, published by Dr Dennis Wheeler, a Sunderland University geographer, in the journal The Holocene, details a surge in the frequency of summer storms over Britain in the 1680s and 1690s.
Many scientists believe storms are a consequence of global warming, but these were the coldest decades of the so-called Little Ice Age that hit Europe from about 1600 to 1850.
Wheeler and his colleagues have since won European Union funding to extend this research to 1750. This shows that during the 1730s, Europe underwent a period of rapid warming similar to that recorded recently – and which must have had natural origins.
Hints of such changes are already known from British records, but Wheeler has found they affected much of the north Atlantic too, and he has traced some of the underlying weather systems that caused it. His research will be published in the journal Climatic Change.
The ships’ logs have also shed light on extreme weather events such as hurricanes. It is commonly believed that hurricanes form in the eastern Atlantic and track westwards, so scientists were shocked in 2005 when Hurricane Vince instead moved northeast to hit southern Spain and Portugal.
Many interpreted this as a consequence of climate change; but Wheeler, along with colleagues at the University of Madrid, used old ships’ logs to show that this had also happened in 1842, when a hurricane followed the same trajectory into Andalusia.
The potential of Royal Navy ships’ logs to offer new insights into historic climate change was spotted by Wheeler after he began researching weather conditions during famous naval battles. Later, as global warming moved up the scientific agenda, he and others realised that the same data could shed light on historic climate change.
He said: “British archives contain more than 100,000 Royal Navy logbooks from around 1670 to 1850 alone. They are a stunning resource.”
Most of these earlier documents contain verbal descriptions of weather rather than numerical data, because ships lacked the instruments to take numerical readings. However, Wheeler and his colleagues found early Royal Navy officers recorded weather in consistent language.
“It means we can deduce numerical values for wind strength and direction, temperature and rainfall,” he said. The information will ultimately contribute to the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmos-phere Data Set, a global database maintained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a US government agency.
Wheeler makes clear he has no doubts about modern human-induced climate change. He said: “Global warming is a reality, but what our data shows is that climate science is complex and that it is wrong to take particular events and link them to CO2 emissions. These records will give us a much clearer picture of what is really happening.”
The Met Office has also set up a project, part-funded by Defra, the environment ministry, to study 900 logbooks kept by the East India Company on voyages between Europe and the Far East between 1780 and 1840. Its vessels carried thermometers and barometers so the data is of higher quality.
Faced with logs taken over so many voyages, the researchers have had to be selective. One of the most avid recorders of such data was Nelson himself, whose personal logbook records the air pressure and other readings he took up to several times daily.

— Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson’s voyages took him to the Arctic, the East and West Indies and the Mediterranean before his death at Trafalgar in 1805
— Captain James Cook mapped much of Canada and the Pacific in the 1760s and 1770s.

Captain Cook's weather reports from Discovery and Resolution, made at noon each day on his voyages to unknown lands, William Bligh’s Bounty and 300 other vessels are being transcribed and digitised.
The project will allow climatologists to trace weather patterns and climate change .
The log books, stored in the National Archives at Kew, contain a unique and highly accurate account of temperature, ice formation, air pressure and wind speed and direction in remote locations all over the world.
Now the UK Colonial Registers and Royal Navy Logbooks project, a partnership that includes the Met Office Hadley Centre and the University of Sunderland, is making all the logs available online.
The weather reports are being charted to allow instant comparisons between past observations and current conditions.
Dennis Wheeler, the project leader and a climatologist, told The Times: "Reading these logs gives me a growing respect for the navigation skills of these captains and officers. The lives of everyone on board often depended on the accuracy of their observations.
“Their conscientious and remarkably detailed reporting has given us an invaluable data resource which fills huge gaps in our knowledge about the history of the climate.”
Victorian logs being digitised under the project include those from the Beagle, the ship that carried the young Charles Darwin on a five-year expedition around the world.
A fully searchable version of the logs will be available on the National Archives website next year.

Hmm... Interesting information, no? Could it be that this has all happened before, and will happen again - even without blaming Humanity for the end of the world? Sorry for the Battlestar Galactica reference, but it sure seems to fit, doesn't it?

With the revelation that previous "evidence" may not be entirely accurate, this should come in quite handy in gathering the data once more. This time, preferably, without an organization who is for one point of view over another. It seems to me that one good thing has come out of the leaked e-mails regarding "global warming". It will allow us all to look at the supposed "hard science" regarding "global warming" - er, sorry, that's "climate change" now. Convenient how they slipped a name change in there, eh?

Anywho, I look forward to the coming years - and with any luck, decades - of new research on the matter. Maybe we'll finally begin to hear the truth about all this "climate change" mumbo-jumbo.

WASHINGTON – After days of secret talks, Senate Democrats tentatively agreed Tuesday night to drop a government-run insurance option from sweeping health care legislation, several officials said, a concession to party moderates whose votes are critical to passage of President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.
Majority Leader Harry Reid refused to provide any details at a mid-evening news conference where he told reporters a "broad agreement" had been reached between liberals and moderates on the controversial issue.
With it, he said, the end is in sight for passage of the legislation that Congress has labored over for months.
In place of a government-run plan, originally designed as a way of forcing competition on private industry, officials said the Democrats had tentatively settled on a private insurance arrangement to be supervised by the federal agency that oversees the system through which lawmakers purchase coverage. Additionally, the tentative deal calls for Medicare to be opened to uninsured Americans beginning at age 55, a significant expansion of the large government health care program that currently serves the 65-and-over population.
The officials who described the details did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss them publicly. Despite their reluctance, some senators had talked openly earlier in the day about the progress of the negotiations.
The developments followed a vote on the Senate floor earlier in the day in which abortion opponents failed to inject tougher restrictions into sweeping health care bill, and Democratic leaders labored to make sure fallout from the issue didn't hamper the drive to enact legislation. The vote was 54-45.

I'm actually quite happy about this. I don't mind there being an option so long as there are strict criteria that needs to be met before one can avail themselves of such a service. And, so long as they don't try forcing private insurances to do their bidding. We need more competition, not less.

Oh, and if we do anything of the sort, it should be when we arn't in debt up to our eyeballs. Use the money to pay down the debt, cut back a bit, even. Ya never know, it might just - you know - work. At least, that's what I've been doing with my personal debt, and you wanna know something? I'm learning far more by paying this off and cutting back than I ever did when someone else paid it for me. There's a lesson in there somewhere, I'm sure of it.

While checking my e-mail, I came across someone's e-mail post to a political conference I participate in from time-to-time, and I saw this article from American Thinker. I'd write more, but my nephews are here and it's difficult to concentrate. lol... Here's the article:

I recently received a direct mail fundraising appeal from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) that contained a premium (direct mail term for ‘freebie'). The letter was signed by Senator John Kerry. The premium was a flexible magnet, the type people put on their refrigerators and such.

The magnet read: STAND FOR CHANGE -- SILENCE GOP LIES -- www.dscc.org.

I've never received a fundraising appeal that expressly urged censorship, even from any group not officially affiliated with a national political party. To urge that anyone be "silenced" is a call for censorship. If challenged, the DSCC will assuredly claim their message is merely that Republicans shouldn't lie (and, of course, Democrats tell the truth).

That this came from a committee of a national political party is more than shameful. It is downright scary and ugly. Without holding my breath, I await the cries from leftwing civil liberties groups.

I wonder who among the Democrats' donors will post this message. Next time you're at the home of a Democrat, check out what's on the ‘fridge.

I also wonder which paragons of liberte, egalite and ‘civilite' in newsrooms and on editorial boards who received this direct mail appeal, since many are Democratic donors, will object to this fundraising tactic -- and who responded with a contribution.

All I can say is... What the fuck!? Are you serious?

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Even as he heralded the first unemployment drop in months, President Barack Obama began putting the finishing touches Friday on a fresh job creation proposal he's planning to send to Congress next week.

"I still consider one job lost one job too many," Obama told a community college crowd in Allentown. "Good trends don't pay the rent."

The president plans to outline his list of ideas for a new jobs bill in a speech from Washington on Tuesday. Among the plans he's likely to endorse is an expansion of a program that gives people cash incentives to fix up their homes with energy-saving materials, senior administration officials said.

Obama also is leaning toward new incentives, either through the tax code or some other means, for small businesses that hire new workers and toward new spending for building roads, bridges and other infrastructure, said the officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the package, and Obama's speech, are still being crafted and could change.

The president also is open to a federal infusion of money to cash-strapped state and local governments, considered among the quickest and most effective — though expensive — ways to stem layoffs. Officials stressed that Obama probably won't mention in his speech every job-stimulating idea he will eventually support.

"We need to grow jobs and get America back to work as quickly as we can," Obama said Friday at Lehigh Carbon Community College. "On Tuesday, I'm going to speak in greater detail about the ideas I'll be sending to Congress to help jump-start private sector hiring and get Americans back to work."

Democrats on Capitol Hill have been pushing for a jobs bill for weeks and are pleased that that Obama is getting on the same page. Under pressure from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the White House and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner are now signaling that tapping unused Wall Street bailout funds to pay for a jobs measure is OK.

Because of growing anxiety about federal deficits, Obama has been stressing that government spending shouldn't be increased too much. During his jobs discussion with CEOs and academics at the White House on Thursday, he said it is primarily up to private business to create large numbers of new jobs, because "our resources are limited."

But using the bailout money to pay for a jobs bill would require issuing billions of dollars in new federal debt. And White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday that option is being actively considered.

Jobs-related legislation is likely to have to wait until next year given the press of business on Capitol Hill. But legislation to extend benefits for the long-term unemployed and subsidies to help them retain their health insurance is more likely to pass this year.

Job losses in the U.S. have been the worst since the 1930s, but a new Labor Department report Friday showed a relatively moderate shedding of 11,000 jobs last month, the smallest number since the recession began. The unemployment rate dipped from 10.2 percent in October to 10 percent in November.

During a campaign-style swing through Allentown, Obama was upbeat about the new numbers, calling them "good news just in time for the season of hope." But he said the situation is still dire and in need of urgent attention.

Making his pitch — and Americans' pain — personal, Obama said his own family had members who were looking for work. The flourish was not included in his prepared remarks.

Evidence of the growing concern in the White House over unemployment problems can be seen in Obama's schedule. He hosted the jobs summit at the White House on Thursday, took the trip to Pennsylvania on Friday and set the jobs-bill speech for Tuesday.

At Allentown Metal Works, the president casually chatted with the kind of working-class voters whose support will be crucial to his plan making its way to Congress and, more daunting, to Democrats' chances in the 2010 midterm elections and his own in 2012. Obama has seen his approval rating slide as his promises of change have slammed into governing reality.

"How you doing?" Obama shouted to workers below a platform where he stood. "Merry Christmas!" he shouted at others. The plant employs about 70 people, and the White House says it's expanding.

The president's motorcade raced past protesters. "Go home," one group chanted. The group also hoisted signs reading "Fail!" and "Republicans work so you don't have to."

Later Friday, Obama made an unannounced stop at a jobs center in Allentown, where he talked with jobseekers about their resumes and the help they've gotten in their search for new employment. He accepted a letter from one woman, promising to read it in private.

"This is a tough environment," Obama said. "This was a rough year."

Obama also visited a pet food company, shaking hands with all 180 workers who lined up inside the factory to greet the president.

Okay, so the government is prepared to bail out yet more? This time to the States? What the hell? Why don't you just cut the damned government by about 50% and stop taking so many taxes from the States and the People? Then, you know, they will have more to do with instead of having to beg for it back?

Oh, and why didn't you involve the United States, Chamber of Commerce in your little pow-pow? They represent the majority of small businesses within the United States, don't they? I'd think that they would be at the top of the list to invite to this shindig. But no, you invited your SEIU/ACORN buddies to it and Google... Yeah, Google, that's definitely small business right there. I mean, sure, the head of Google would probably have some interesting stuff to say, but you should have at least had the US, Chamber of Commerce there to give you a hint at what should be done to help them get to a point where they can hire more people.

As it stands now, they are so damned worried about what you - and your government - is going to do with new regulations that they are tightening their belt instead of trying to hire more. So, how is government interfering with the market working out for us? Not so well. But will President Obama and his allies realize it in time to save our economy? At this rate, probably not.

And, what the hell are the Unions doing there? They are half the damned problem. They have demanded so much crap from businesses that they can't hire new people, offer the choice of insurance packages, and a decent raise in pay when the business is doing well. Now, don't get me wrong you Liberal Union folks, I think the Unions have helped out workplace situations in factories(etc) a great deal, but come on. They push for so much so damned quickly that business has to strain - in many cases when it's a small business - to comply with them. Then they whine about being laid off when the business goes under. Dumbasses.

That's not to say that those at the top of those business - especially the multi-billion dollar companies - haven't had a serious effect on the economy with their stupidity. The dumbasses take a crap load of money, even when the company is going in the shitter, instead of taking a pay cut and putting that money back into the company to help out until the tough times are over.

If it was me running those businesses, I would have - once I had seen the problems rearing it's ugly head - taken at least a 70% pay cut to try and keep as many people working as possible while I figure out where we(I) fucked up. Is it that hard to figure out how to run a company effectively when it comes to finances? Hell no. Just be smart with the money, and if you are, the pay-offs will be much greater in the end. Not only for the top-dog, but the employees as well.

Personally, I think President Obama should stop offering bail-outs and 'stimulus' packages. It's only hurting us further and delaying the inevitable. So let the companies that are stupid fail. They can use bankruptcy court like anyone else. If they fail completely, good, you've gotten a poorly run business out of the way making room for a person who is smarter and who has learned from the mistakes of those before coming into play and hiring people.
